Aiding Drivers with the Invisible-to-Visible Technology

The vehicle technologies have continued to exponentially grow in recent years. Several features like cameras and sensors keep drivers safe on the road. It demonstrates that technology is now an integral part of every vehicle.

On the 7th of January 2019, the most important technology event in the world, the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2019) took place in Las Vegas. In that event, Nissan unveiled its concept of invisible-to-visible technology. This concept helps drivers “see the invisible” by combining the real world with the virtual world.

Nissan Intelligent Mobility creates invisible-to-visible technology or I2V to make driving more convenient and exciting. The technology uses sensor and camera information on the vehicle, combines it with cloud data, and projects the world of mixed reality on the windshields.

The invisible-to-visible technology combines indoor and outdoor sensor information with cloud data. This enables the I2V system to track the current environment of the vehicle and to anticipate what lies ahead. It shows what comes from behind a building or around a corner. The potential use case is not only to make the lonely ride home feel better, but to also help the driver navigate, park, and drive.

The technology maps a virtual 360-degree space around the car to provide information about road and intersection status, visibility, signage, or pedestrians in the vicinity. It can also monitor people inside the vehicle by using internal sensors to anticipate better whether they need help to find something or a coffee break to be alert.

In the virtual world of Metaverse, I2V can also connect drivers and passengers. This allows family, friends, or others to appear in the car as three-dimensional avatars of augmented reality to provide company or support. With internet access, I2V can be used anywhere. But the introduction of 5G or later wireless technologies in moving vehicles will have to wait.

It is expected that this technology will motivate the use of cars to gain the experience of the I2V user. This exciting new technology also provides interactive guidance that makes driving more enjoyable. With some potential hazards coming out of the corner of the eye in a split second, this technology can provide the drivers with security like never before.
