The next new car will not be self-driving, but it will be a mobile IoT device that senses its local environment and interacts with the cloud-based platforms.
FREMONT, CA: Autonomous cars and other vehicles might still be years away from widespread deployment, but connected cars are very much at par with the current state. The modern automobile is quickly becoming a sensor-laden mobile Internet of Things device, with a considerable onboard computing power and communication systems focused on three broad areas: driver behavior, vehicle location, engine diagnostics and vehicle activity (telematics); the nearby environment (vehicle-to-everything or V2X communication); and the vehicle's occupants (infotainment). All of these systems utilize cellular and increasingly 5G technology, among various others.
Despite 5G networks still being a work in progress for the mobile operators, the pace of deployment and launches is fast. Towards the end of 2019, according to the GSA (Global mobile Suppliers Association), 61 operators in 34 countries had launched one or more than 3GPP-compliant 5G services. Forty-nine operators had launched the 5G mobile services, while 34 had launched FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) or home broadband services. The GSA said, 77 operators had disposed of 3GPP-compliant technology in their networks, and 348 operators in 119 countries were putting their money in 5G.
Companies are moving the pieces into place for the augmented growth of 5G-connected IoT solutions in the automotive space. According to a forecast by an analyst firm, by 2023, the automotive industry is set in becoming an enormous market opportunity for 5G IoT solutions, depicting 53 percent of the total 5G IoT endpoint market in 2023.
It is predicted that the 5G IoT endpoint installed base will expand almost 14-fold in the coming three years, from 3.5 million units in the year 2020 to 48.6 million units in 2023. This year, the market is dominated by outdoor surveillance cameras, but by 2023, automotive solutions will be outplaced.
