The concept of smart charging is straightforward; unlike conventional (or 'unintelligent') chargers, smart chargers can connect with one other, the consumer's car, and the grid to deliver better pricing and energy consumption. Drivers can still plug in the car as soon as they reach home, but it won't start charging until the appropriate time arrives. Smart charging also encourages more efficient energy use. Electric vehicles are meant to be charged gradually and do not necessarily need to be charged promptly or quickly because drivers do not always require a fully charged battery. Depending on how much energy the vehicle requires, charges can be planned to go up to only 80 percent once a week, which helps to extend the battery's life.

Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging is another trend that is expected to benefit the EV market. With so much energy stored in EV batteries, V2G charging is a means to assist power back into the grid.

This would be extremely beneficial, given the demands of EV charging imposed on the national grid are a possibly looming catastrophe for the UK. Particularly given the current dependency on electricity and the consequent price rises as we move away from reliance on fossil fuels. This allows drivers to save and/or earn money, and also allow their EV batteries to store energy and discharge it back into their own homes or business buildings when it was most needed.
